A Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows you to securely access your company’s internal network and resources when working remotely. This ensures that sensitive data is encrypted and protected from unauthorized access.
Follow the steps below to connect to your company VPN, along with common troubleshooting tips.
Before you begin, make sure you have:
Your VPN username and password (provided by your IT administrator)
The correct VPN server address
Any required VPN client software (Cisco AnyConnect, FortiClient, OpenVPN, Windows built-in VPN, etc.)
Admin approval if connecting from a personal device
Your organization may use one of the following:
Cisco AnyConnect
FortiClient VPN
OpenVPN Connect
WireGuard
SonicWall Mobile Connect
If your company uses a built-in Windows or macOS VPN, no additional software may be required.
Your IT team should provide the correct installer or download link.
Once installed:
Launch the VPN app from your Start Menu, Applications folder, or system tray.
Make sure you have a stable internet connection before proceeding.
In the VPN connection field, enter the server information given by your organization:
Example format:
vpn.yourcompany.com
Do not use a generic VPN server — only the company-approved server will work.
Enter your:
VPN username
Password
MFA code (if enabled — many businesses require this for security)
Click Connect or Sign In.
You will typically see:
A success notification
A “Connected” status
A lock icon in your taskbar or menu bar
At this point, your device is securely connected to your company network.
After connecting, you may now be able to:
Access internal servers
Connect to shared drives
Use remote desktop applications
Reach company-only websites or apps
Access internal phone or VoIP tools
Some companies route all traffic through the VPN, while others only route work-related traffic (split tunneling).
Double-check your credentials. If your password recently changed, you may need to update it in the VPN client.
If using an authenticator app:
Ensure your phone’s date/time settings are automatic
Confirm you’re inputting the most recent code
If MFA is locked, submit a support ticket.
Possible causes:
Internet outage
Blocked firewall settings
Server maintenance
Incorrect server address
Test your internet and verify the server URL.
This may indicate:
DNS issues
Split tunneling configuration problems
Permission restrictions
Network routing conflicts
Restart your VPN connection. If it persists, contact support.
VPN traffic may slow down speeds depending on:
Server load
Your provider’s connection quality
Encryption overhead
If performance is unacceptable, notify IT.
To ensure a secure remote work environment:
Avoid connecting from public Wi-Fi without VPN and MFA
Keep your device fully updated
Do not share your VPN credentials
Disconnect the VPN when not in use
Use company-approved antivirus and security tools
Report unusual errors or login attempts immediately
